FaQ (Frequently asked Questions)

Where is the best place / time to go? Tanzania is great to visit any time of year.  Most people avoid the rainy months of April, May, and November. Take a look at our Weather page for more information.

What is the migration? The migration in Tanzania is world-renowned. Millions of wildebeests participate in the migration through Tanzania and Kenya. Hundreds of thousands of zebra join them. Although lions and other carnivores do not migrate with the grazing animals, they feast on them when their paths cross.

When is the best time to see the migration? The best time to see the migration in Tanzania is often January-March and June-August. In the Kenya, it is often best September-October. These are also the most popular times to go, so you will need to book well in advance. You will see an abundance of wildlife all year round.

Do you accommodate people with dietary restrictions? Vegetarian and other special diets can be accommodated. Please let us know ahead of time. Protein options may be minimal on a vegetarian diet, so you may want to bring protein supplements.

What immunizations / shots are required? Talk to your doctor about Hepatitis A / Hepatitis BTyphoid Yellow fever / Tetanus Polio MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) Meningococcal Meningitis (Africa/Asia)

Can I get a visa upon arrival? Yes, you can get a visa at major airports and at border crossings, but try to get one ahead of time to make your entry into the country as easy as possible. Take a look at Visas.

I am a solo (single) traveler, how can I join your tour? We can add solo travelers to a group, or we can arrange a private trip for you.

How soon do I have to book your tour? We recommend booking your trip as soon as possible. Lodges and tented camps on safari are booked quickly, so we need to reserve those before they fill up.

Do you customize a tour? Yes, just let us know what’s in your mind and we will put all together for you!

What's the food like on the safari? Lodges and tented camps serve breakfast and dinner, typically buffet-style.  Lunches are often a box lunch eaten while on your game drive.

Will I have a chance to interact with the local people of Tanzania? Some people combine their safari with some days volunteering at a local orphanage. You can choose from volunteering at the Shalom Orphanage, which is located in Karatu between Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro, or other local orphanage in Arusha.

What type of vehicles do you provide? We use 4 or 6 passenger 4-wheel-drive Land Cruisers, all with viewing roofs for the safaris.

What if the safari jeep breaks en route? Asili Explorer is responsible for sending a rescue vehicle(s) within 4 to 5 hours (depending on your location) upon receiving notification of a vehicle breakdown. The vehicle shall be replaced and compensation awarded by way of additional time allotment (extra half day or full day), or a refund of up to 30% of a full day tour deducted from the total daily tour cost. If necessary, an emergency evacuation can be arranged by “flying doctors” (included in the trip package, on your request), or a simple transfer to nearby Hotel or lodge for accommodation and catering services.

What food can I expect on safari? You will be pleasantly surprised by both the quality and the variety of the food available on safari. In most lodges, meals are served buffet-style, so you can choose what you like. The food is generally prepared according to western tastes, with some curries and local cuisine included. If you choose a camping safari, fresh meat and produce is prepared to the highest sanitary standards by our team’s expert chefs. Indeed, most returning guests rave about our camp food! Request for local food is certainly welcome. Your guide and chef will generally purchase all the food before the safari starts, so get your orders in on time!

What is the average size of a safari group? Small. Our scheduled safaris vary in size depending on the nature of the safari. In general, we keep our groups small (minimum 1 to 5 people, and occasionally up to an absolute maximum of 15). We feel strongly that the small size allows a more intimate connection with the African wilderness.

Can I take my children on safari? YES! Asili Explorer has a personal understanding and deep commitment to meeting the special needs of families. Our trips are well suited for children. We have designed our unique family safari programs to allow you and your children to experience the wonders of Africa together. Please outline your particular family’s interests, so that we can incorporate them. You and your family will have a unique opportunity to deepen your understanding of cultural diversity, discover the many miracles of nature, and at the same time play, laugh, and enjoy the pleasure of one another.

Are the guides on safari certified? They are licensed, trained, friendly, and have years of experience!

Can we buy extra bottles of water along the safari? You can buy any drinks along your way to the safari. There will be mini-markets in town.
